Are You Looking Forward to an Antarctica Cruise?

July 29th, 2008 by admin

An Antarctica cruise is not a typical family vacation. Instead of seeing costumed cartoon characters, you get to see exotic wildlife, amazing icebergs, and experience the most arid conditions anywhere on earth. It’s certainly not everyone’s idea of a relaxing vacation. However, for a true adventurer, it is a trip you simply must experience to believe. What can you expect to see on an Antarctica cruise?

First, know that Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in the world and most of this region is covered in ice. In fact, there is only about 1% of accessible land territory in this artic region. Visitors say the scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile, as you get to see monstrously sized glaciers, ice rivers, and ice towers up close. Typical landmark destinations include the South Pole, the Antarctic Peninsula, and the Paradise Bay. Antarctica has been called a freezing desert. It is literally the coldest, driest, and most elevated land anywhere on earth.

How do you travel to, from, and around Antarctica? Usually by vessel or aircraft and accompanied by an expedition leader. This isn’t exactly a tourist region where people can safely roam free. You need expert guidance to survive this icy wilderness. Does an Antarctica cruise appeal to you? Where can you go for travel arrangements and leadership?

Try the Expedition Trips website. This travel company specializes in booking trips to adventurous regions significant to natural history, cultural and science. The company has over 50 years of experience planning trips and leading expeditions. While it is an adventure to travel to Antarctica, it is a safe destination and travelers can book a ticket for their entire family. In fact, Expedition Trips is currently offering a 50% discount to child travelers who accompany their parents. For a unique vacation experience, try an Antarctica cruise!

Group Cruising - What Are Group Amenity Points?

July 28th, 2008 by admin

Are you the leader for a group cruise? If so, then you probably have some questions about what special amenities your group is entitled to.

WHAT ARE GROUP AMENITY POINTS?

Group amenity points (or GAP points) are points that cruise lines give as an incentive for groups to book with their cruise line. The number of points awarded to each group (if any) is based on the popularity of any particular cruise itinerary. For instance, if a cruise line wants to promote a specific cruise that may be a slow seller for them, they will typically offer more group amenity points for that sailing. On the other hand, if a particular sailing is popular, the group amenity points will be low (if any are offered at all). Because GAP points can amount to a significant value for your group, it’s important to ask the cruise line or your travel agent which sailings will result in the most group amenity points.

The amount of points awarded for most group cruise bookings is somewhere between two points and eight points. Some cruise lines will have promotions where they’ll award a huge number of points (over eight) if they are really trying to push a specific cruise sailing. But, typically, the number of points is eight and under.

WHAT CAN WE DO WITH OUR GAP POINTS?

Group amenity points can be spent like a coupon. They can be spent on a variety of items or activities. Usually, the cruise line wants to know how your group’s points will be spent by the time final payment is due.

Things that GAP points can be spent on are:

Photos: Throughout the cruise, the ship’s photographer is taking photos of the passengers. When guests arrive onboard the ship, their photo is usually taken. At most ports of call, the ship’s photographer is usually waiting there to catch a shot of passengers with some type of prop that identifies the port (like a life preserver with the name of the port of call). Also, if the ship has a formal night, there are usually stations set up throughout the ship with a variety of different backgrounds. Go to all the photo stations and take as many different photos as possible. This way you’ll be sure to get a good one out of the bunch. You can usually spend one GAP point for a photo credit for your group. This is a great benefit, as everyone will go home with a professional photo to memorialize their trip.

Specialty Restaurant: Most ships now offer a specialty restaurant with a premium charge of approximately $20. The quality of the food is high end - as it’s easier for the ship to prepare a higher quality of cuisine on a smaller scale. This benefit usually costs groups two points and is a wonderful benefit.

Bottle of Wine: Many groups like the idea of a bottle of wine waiting in their stateroom to welcome them onboard their cruise. This is a very popular way to spend your points and it typically costs one or two points.

Fruit Basket or Other Food Items: Would your group members like a welcome fruit basket in their stateroom when they arrive? Or perhaps they’d like some chocolate covered strawberries or a small tray of canapes? This is a popular choice for groups and usually costs one or two points.

Shipboard Credit: Some cruise lines will offer a choice of $25 or $50 shipboard credit per stateroom. This is one of the most expensive amenity choices (using four or more of your points) and not all cruise lines offer it.

The group leader will need to make the decision about how to spend the GAP points awarded to the group because everyone in the group will receive the same things. People in the group can’t select different amenity choices - everyone in the group will receive the same benefits.

WILL WE ALWAYS RECEIVE OUR GAP POINTS?

You may not realize it, but one of the group amenity choices that your group can select is additional commission for your travel agent. In fact, some travel agents won’t even tell you about your group’s GAP points and will spend them on additional commission for themselves. A reputable agent would never do this, but not all agents are honest. So, make sure you select an agent you can trust. Ask them to show you the group cruise contract. This will reveal the total amenity points awarded to your group.

USING A TRAVEL AGENT OR GOING DIRECT

As the group leader, you are responsible for making sure your group gets the most value for the money. Deciding whether to use a travel agent or going directly with the cruise line is a decision you’ll need to make. Some leaders believe they’ll get a better deal if they go direct through the cruise line. This certainly isn’t true. We recommend making the choice to use a travel agent. Why? A travel agent can compare offers and benefits from a variety of cruise lines. The cruise lines won’t be able to determine the best value for your group, as they can only recommend their own cruise line (as that’s all they’re familiar with). So, you can be sure you’re getting the best value available from any cruise line when you use the services of a good travel agent.

CONCLUSION

Knowing what group amenity points are and what you, as the group cruise leader, can do with them is an important part of being in charge. Take the time to determine the best value for your GAP points and, if you do it right, your group will appreciate you and give you all the kudos you deserve for your efforts in making the trip a success.

Advice When Buying Your Alaskan Cruise Package

July 27th, 2008 by admin

In today’s society, we often think of traveling as a boring, tedious task. Maybe that is because we are more concerned with getting to our destination so quickly that we don’t take time to enjoy our ride. However, this all changes when you choose a cruise for your vacation. Instead of having your vacation begin when you arrive at your destination, your vacation will begin when you board the dock. An Alaskan Cruise package is a great way to enjoy all of the time you allot for your vacation.

Your Alaskan Cruise vacation package will include a jubilee of activities included. However, before you assume that this will cost you an arm and a leg, remember that proper preparation will keep everything affordable. By arming yourself with some good travel tips you can save yourself from spending too much.

You can either do the research yourself, or contact a travel agent. Sometimes an agent can find a better deal for you than you would be able to locate on your own. You can start by making a list of all the cruise lines which offer service to Alaskan ports. This is a fairly lengthy list now, so allow yourself time to check out rates and packages.

The next thing that you can do when preparing for your Alaskan Cruise vacation is to book your cruise during the off seasons. Also make sure that you book early, at least a few months in advance, to prevent yourself from paying more. If you do not mind the weather being colder, then you might want to consider booking during the off season and save yourself a lot of money.

The next thing to consider is the size of the cruise ship that you would like to travel with. Some ships will carry over 2000 people whereas others might carry only a few hundred. Prices will change according to ship size. Another factor to consider is what type of cabin that you would like to stay in. If you are on a large ship with tons of activities then you may not care about your cabin and whether it has a window or not.

For one final note, make sure that you are aware of the cruise’s position on insurance while you are on your cruise. Do not let yourself be put in an unfortunate event with no insurance.

Guide to Oceania Discount Cruises

July 26th, 2008 by admin

Do you enjoy cruising and are looking for a different vacation experience? Have you already visited Alaska, the Greek Isles, and Mexico? Are you looking for a bright summer vacation in the middle of a cold winter? It is time to experience a new area of the planet, it is time to visit Oceania. Do not be afraid of an exotic vacation costing more than you can afford. You will be able to find discount cruises to Oceania.

Oceania is the section of the earth around the South Pacific islands and Australia. These are the areas of the world commonly known as Micronesia and Polynesia. Cruises in the Oceania region are becoming popular and considered a luxury cruise on a moderate budget. Because cruises to many of the islands in Oceania are not as popular or well known, the prices for these cruises are more moderate than some of the Caribbean island cruises.

The cruise ships used for Oceania cruises are usually smaller than the average ship used for other cruises. The ships still contain all the amenities you have come to expect from other cruise vacations but on a slightly smaller scale. A smaller ship also means less people but usually the same amount of crew. So if large crowds bother you consider giving cruising one more try with a cruise to Oceania. Less vacationers means the crew will be able to pay more attention to you and your needs.

Because of the changes in seasons between the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere, the prime cruising period for Oceania is from September to February. Oceania will be in the middle of summer during this time and quite reasonable in temperature. Imagine a Christmas holiday cruise to Australia where the sun is shining instead of shoveling snow in your driveway.

Finding a discount cruise to Oceania is easy. First, you can choose to travel during an off-peak time. During off-peak travel, cruise ships offer great discounts to travelers because there is reduced demand for travel. Also, you can find great discounts if you are able to travel on one or two days notice. Cruise companies always want to sale with a full ship so many times they will offer last minute travel discounts or bonuses to travelers. It may take you a day to travel to your port of call, but a good travel agent will keep travel time in mind when contacting you about last minute cruise deals.

There are many websites that offer cruise deals and usually Oceania discount cruises will be included in their deals. Sign up for cruise sale notifications and contact your local travel agents and ask them to contact you if any last minute sales are posted to the ports you want to visit. Be as flexible with your travel dates as you can and you will find a great deal and a new location for cruising. With all the islands in the Oceania region you may spend years cruising the ports of Oceania.

Cruise the British Virgin Islands

July 25th, 2008 by admin

The British Virgin Islands are perhaps one of the most popular Caribbean destinations visited each year today. They are incredibly diverse, tropical and offer a wide range of discovery. You can choose to visit only one of the British Virgin Islands or you can choose what many people choose, the cruise tours through each and every one of the islands. You do not have to take an actual cruise ship to enjoy this experience, although there are British Virgin Island cruises available if you choose that option. What many people are doing is choosing an island such as Tortola, and from there you can pay for boat tours which bring you to each of the British Virgin Islands for little excursions and day trips.

As Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands this is the island many people choose to stay during their vacation. Within Tortola you can stay in private hillside villas, all-inclusive resorts or cozy bed and breakfasts, depending on your preference. The British Virgin Islands are very versatile and no matter what the reason for your vacation or what your plans are you can be sure that these islands have what it takes to fulfill your vacation dreams. The best part about the British Virgin Islands is the ability you have to not be secluded to one island. You have more than one vehicle option to see the rest of the islands at your leisure.

If you are staying in Tortola you can take advantage of the ferry or the helicopter taxi to take you to the next island. These are great and affordable scenic flights to take and you can enjoy the flight just as much as the little time it takes to get you to the next island. If you choose the water ferry, you can travel from one island to the next in less than 50minutes. This is an option many people choose as it is more affordable than the helicopter but this ferry moves fast and if you are prone to water sickness you may want to look over your other options. These vehicles of travel can be booked in collaboration with your resort or hotel as many tourists are interested in taking in all the sites not just one of the British Virgin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands can be a very affordable trip, even if you are looking to visit each and every one of the islands for exploration, relaxation and even a little romance. Of course if you are not comfortable doing the traveling yourself there are many cruise lines which take the travel through the British Virgin Islands. These cruises are far more expensive than doing the traveling yourself, but many people enjoy the luxury and convenience cruise ships provide. No matter which option you choose to cruise the British Virgin Islands you will not be disappointed. They offer a great combination of culture, tropical atmosphere and a secluded part of the Caribbean which can be found nowhere else.

How to Guarantee Yourself a Fast and Easy Airport Security Check

July 24th, 2008 by admin

When you travel, security checkpoints at airports can be quite time-consuming and stressful, especially when you’re in a hurry. Here are some tips to help you quickly and easily pass through.

Come with your carry-on bags prepared when you travel. Currently, passengers are not allowed to take through more than 3 ounces of a liquid or gel through the checkpoint. The liquids and gels should be placed in a clear, quart size plastic bag inside your carry-on. Have this bag easily accessible so that you can place it on one of the trays when you go through security. (Certain foods, drinks, baby formula and medications over 3 ounces may be allowed through security checkpoints. Make the agents aware of these items before going through to ease the process.)

When you travel by plane, wear shoes that you can easily remove and put back on. Consider carrying an extra plastic bag with you that you can throw in your keys, wallet, cell phone, and anything extra you have in your pockets when you pass through security. These important items are altogether in the bag and can’t accidentally be lost, forgotten, or mixed up. Have your photo identification and ticket ready to show the agents when passing through security.

Clear Cards are now available for purchase at 18 airports. These cards allow you to move ahead to the front of the line when you pass through security checkpoints at airports, instead of waiting in the long lines. The security check is the same, but the maximum wait time with this card is 5 minutes. The clear card costs $128. To purchase one, you must go to an airport that currently accepts the card. There, the computer scans your finger prints, eyes and takes a picture. This information is sent to the Department of Homeland Security and they mail you your clear card within about two weeks. The 18 airports currently accepting the clear card are:

1.Reno Tahoe International Airport
2.San Francisco International Airport
3.Oakland International Airport
4.Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport
5.Salt Lake City International Airport
6.Denver International Airport
7.Indianapolis International Airport
8.Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport
9.Little Rock Airport
10.Albany Airport
11.Westchester County Airport
12.LaGuardia International Airport
13.John F. Kennedy International Airport
14.Neward Liberty International Airport
15.Dulles International Airport
16.Reagan National Airport
17.Jacksonville International Airport
18.Orlando International Airport

The Clear Card will soon be accepted at Los Angeles International Airport and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

If you travel a lot and the airports you most commonly travel to accept the clear card, consider purchasing one to shorten the wait time when you go through security. If not, try the other tips to ease the process and reduce stress the when you travel.

Flexibility of travel dates we have seen is one of the great deciding factors in finding out air tickets. Most people want to travel on the weekends and airlines know about it and charge extra from $25-$30 extra each way on each ticket. Traveling midweek is a better option.

Accumulate Frequent Flyer Points For Free Flights

July 22nd, 2008 by admin

For those travelers who are genuine frequent flyers, the correct use of the various frequent flyer programs can ensure the traveler a choice of airline. It does not matter if you have a tight budget or your company pays for your plane tickets. The fact that you are flying ensures that you get to earn points or miles for flying. These points can get you an upgrade from an economy to a business or fist class seat. There are three ways to get points: through flying, by spending on an affinity credit card and finally, by purchasing points. There are also programs that airlines have in which they will give you miles as gifts.

Airlines promote frequent flyer programs because they want to reward the loyalty of their frequent flyers and they want their flyers to get the best value for their money which is also a reward for being their most valuable customers. They would want their frequent flyers to have the best experience in flying. And then, in turn, their customers will not want to fly with any other airline because they tend to want to accumulate those points.

You have to be wary of mileage expiration which is usually 3 years after the miles were earned. So if there are no activities within the next 3 years, your miles will be canceled. Some offer option such as magazine subscriptions in exchange for your points. Do not be blinded with the points, check out the policies and rules that govern these frequent flyer programs.

The fact of the matter is there are people who travel frequently due to due to business, personal, family, or other commitments. If you are one of those people, get the most out of your flying with frequent flyer programs.
